The Irony of “Mature”
August 29, 2008
I was worried that my recent post about breastfeeding was going to be flagged as “mature” so I inquired about it in a WordPress support forum thread. It turns out that the post would not be considered, “mature”, and one poster even stated that it is, “less than mature”, which I thought was kind of ironic, because the meaning had been changed to mean, “childish”, rather than, “adult content”. Afterall, I’m sure there could be plenty of instances where a post/image could contain nudity and also be very “immature” as well. How can something be “mature” and “less than mature” at the same time?
Also, what about, “adult content”? The WordPress FAQ section on unsuitable content mentions that, “Blogs with legal adult content are not removed. They are flagged as “Mature” so they become less visible across the domain by being excluded from Top Blogs, Recent Posts and Tags.”
Wouldn’t a post about taxes be considered “adult content” since the only people who would care would be adults? I find the irony of all this to be rather humorous.
